In my case, I want to install a copy of MS-DOS 6.22. The instructions are supposed to be as follows:
Download and install the ISO image of the MS-DOS 6.22 disk drive.
Now, you can open the disk image file using any compatible image viewer.
Somehow, step 2 is not working for me.
I keep getting an error message saying that I have a corrupt file. But the error message I get is different than the one in the docs.
NOTE: When I create an ISO file, it shows up as corrupt. Is there anything special that I need to do to make it work?
A:
Since you have a MS-DOS 6.22 disk image file and are using VirtualBox to run it, I would advise you to do the following:
Go to the VirtualBox manual (click on the index icon in the VirtualBox menu, and scroll down to "Installing an operating system").
Click the Download button
In the download box, look for a large block labeled Image files in the right side of the box.
In the large box labeled "Select a file to start the download of the installer for the operating system" on the left side of the box, find the file named:
.img
Click on the file and wait for the download to complete.
Once the download is complete, right-click on the file and click on "Open"
Choose a folder to save it.
Right-click on the file and click on "Extract"
Voila! You now have an.IMG file.
The reason why this approach works is that the.IMG file is actually just a.ISO file with an.IMG file at the end.
In case you want to try doing things the other way round, which is the recommended way in the Microsoft documentation, and in case you are running Windows, I would recommend to do the following:
Right-click on the file and click on "Open".
Click the option "Explore"
Choose a folder to save it.
Right-click on the file and click on "Extract".
Voila! You now have a.IMG file.
